瑞典海上救援协会大无畏的志愿者来自各行各业——木工、医生、教师、水管工……执行任务时,可靠的机械设备就是他们坚强的后盾。
Carpenters, doctors, teachers and plumbers. These are just some of the people who bravely volunteer for the Swedish Sea Rescue Society, and they need reliable machinery when they are on duty.

The Swedish Sea Rescue Society (Sj?r?ddningss?llskapet) is made up of about 2,200 specially trained volunteers. This dedicated team of carpenters, doctors, fishermen, salesmen, plumbers, teachers and the like are on call to go out in any weather, at any time (even during work hours or the middle of the night) to save lives. Together they cover Sweden's major lakes and the country's 2,400-kilometre-long coastline, stretching from the Baltic Sea to Skagerrak.

Although it is responsible for 80 percent of all sea rescues in Sweden, the organization receives no government funding. Instead, it is financed by membership fees, donations and voluntary work.

"Despite this, or possibly as a result of this, we have doubled the number of sea rescue stations in recent years, tripled the number of volunteers and built 230 modern rescue vessels," says Per-Egon Persson, a former Chief Technical Officer now responsible for the commissioning of new boats at the Sea Rescue Society.

The latest addition to the fleet is a 15-metre rescue vessel, due to be launched this year. And with the installation of two Scania 13-litre diesels with water jet propulsion and a bow thruster, the 15-tonne composite-built boat has excellent manoeuvring capabilities and a maximum speed of 34 knots.

"We really like the specifications Scania is able to deliver," says Persson. "Scania's engines have an excellent weight-effect ratio and their sizes are compact."

Scania's 13-litre engine is actually oversized for its duties, as it can be configured for up to 925 hp, whereas for the Rescue Society it is configured for 650 hp.

"But that's the way we want it," says Persson. "We strive for long-lasting engines that require minimal maintenance."

The Swedish Sea Rescue Society has a long tradition of working with Scania. Most of its larger and more recently built vessels have Scania engines.

"Ever since I started in 1994, we have had a fantastic cooperation," says Persson. "Scania has always listened to our needs and always supported us – and the spare parts handling is great. This is a tradition that will continue.”
